Voices of Young Refugees
In Australia and New Zealand this year, the Voices of Young Refugees is the theme for World Refugee Day (20 June) and for Australian Refugee Week (17 to 23 June) -- moved for the first time to coincide with the UN observance day.
Over the past decade, there has been a marked increase in the number of young refugees coming to Australia, peaking at 75% of the offshore humanitarian programme in 2006.
This year's theme is a call to listen to the refugee young people themselves, their challenges and their triumphs.
Even in countries like Australia and New Zealand with very good settlement services, there are a myriad challenges for refugee youth. Finding the right spot in the school system, learning a new language, navigating a way through a new culture and society while going through adolescence are just some of the issues.
But World Refugee Day is not just about highlighting the issues. It's also a time to celebrate resilience, triumph and the contribution refugees make to their new homes.
