Internships

Thank you for your interest in the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees Internship program.

The UNHCR Regional Office in Canberra offers internships in the following areas:

Legal/Resettlement Section

In undertaking a UNHCR internship with the Legal Protection Unit, you are provided with the opportunity to gain practical legal work experience and the unique opportunity to contribute to the work of the United Nations.

Successful candidates will be engaged in legal and policy work encompassing many aspects of legal protection of refugees and others of concern to the office in the South Pacific region and globally.

Applicants must have, or be in the process of acquiring, a law degree and have experience or a demonstrated interest in asylum and refugee protection or human rights.

The internship is a full-time voluntary position for a minimum period of three months (with the possibility of extension). The working hours are 8:45am – 5:00pm Monday to Friday.

The Legal Protection Unit normally recruits several persons per intake. There are four intakes per year commencing on 1 February, 1 May, 1 August, and 1 November.

Please send us a resume and a covering letter outlining your qualifications and experience. Please also indicate for which intake you would like to be considered.

Please contact UNHCR on +61 2 6260 3411 or email aulca@unhcr.org for further information.

Public Information Section

A small number of internships are available in the Public Information unit for graduate students from the region in International Relations, Journalism, or Communications with some work experience in a relevant field. In addition, people with significant experience in community education, public relations or journalism are also encouraged to apply.

The duration of internships is flexible to fit in with study and paid work commitments and the nature of the project assigned. However, as a general rule, interns are expected to work a minimum of 20 full days on a part or full-time basis. Preference will be given to candidates who can commit to a longer period of time.

Please send an expression of interest including your Curriculum Vitae and an outline of your professional skills to aulcapi@unhcr.org or phone +61 2 6260 3411 for more information.

Internship conditions

All internships are entirely voluntary. There are no payments and all costs connected with an internship must be borne by the intern, including travel, living and accommodation costs.
